For years, we have witnessed firsthand the profound impact this organization has on the lives of individuals and families, particularly those from historically marginalized communities.
A Legacy of Empowerment
The Urban League of Portland has a long and respected history rooted in advocacy, service, and leadership. Established in 1945, the organization has consistently focused on uplifting Black Oregonians and other communities of color throughout the Portland Metro area. Today, the Urban League employs more than 165 people from our community who are dedicated to building pathways to stability, opportunity, and success.Their commitment to providing housing, senior services, education, workforce development, and health programs closely aligns with Rivermark’s mission to improve financial well-being for our members and the communities we serve. This shared purpose has made our collaboration both natural and impactful.
Through a wide range of initiatives, the Urban League works to address systemic barriers that limit access to opportunity. Their efforts in job training, financial literacy, and educational support help individuals build skills, confidence, and long-term security while strengthening the broader community. Together, we are able to amplify this work by combining trusted community relationships with financial expertise and resources.
Collaborative Programs that Make a Difference
One area of focus the Urban League is especially proud of is its leadership in developing low-cost, high-opportunity housing throughout the greater Portland area. Their housing programs have positioned the organization as an important co-developer of affordable housing paired with critical support services. Housing remains a key initiative for the Urban League’s leadership team, and they are currently co-developing 230 units of affordable housing as part of the city’s Broadway Corridor project.Rivermark has supported the Urban League in a variety of ways over the years, with a focus on meeting people where they are and responding to real, community-identified needs. As a credit union leader in financial wellness and education, Rivermark works closely with the Urban League to develop services that reflect the lived experiences of Black Oregonians. These efforts help individuals build financial stability, reach personal goals, and thrive as active members of the community.

Advancing Financial Empowerment Through Partnership
The Rivermark Financial Wellness team plays an active and collaborative role in supporting the Urban League of Portland through our partnership in the Financial Empowerment Collaborative. This partnership is focused on expanding access to financial education, one-on-one coaching, and practical resources that advance financial well-being in underserved communities, with a particular focus on Black Oregonians.Through consistent engagement, including regular in-person and virtual meetings, co-facilitated webinars, and participation in Urban League new employee orientations, our team works to increase awareness and understanding of the Financial Empowerment Collaborative and the benefits it offers. These touchpoints help ensure that financial education is accessible, relevant, and connected to real-life goals.
Rivermark also provides individualized financial coaching to Urban League participants who are referred to our team. These coaching relationships help participants build confidence, develop personalized action plans, and take meaningful steps toward improved financial health. When appropriate, individuals are further supported through access to Rivermark products such as credit builder loans, creating additional pathways to strengthen financial stability and long-term success. This hands-on approach reflects Rivermark’s commitment to financial empowerment that goes beyond transactions and focuses on lasting outcomes.

The Urban League of Portland excels at fostering meaningful connections across the community. Through events, workshops, and forums, they create welcoming spaces for dialogue, learning, and collaboration. Our partnership has allowed us to co-host events focused on financial empowerment, health equity, and educational access, providing trusted information while strengthening community relationships.The Urban League’s dedication to supporting youth through mentorship and scholarship programs is especially inspiring. Together, we have helped develop initiatives that encourage young people to pursue higher education, career pathways, and long-term financial confidence. By investing in the next generation, we are helping to build a stronger and more equitable future for our region.
