Secure chip cards are:

  • More secure.  These new cards contain sophisticated chips that help prevent fraud and offer members an added layer of security.
  • Accepted everywhere. The cards are accepted everywhere Visa is accepted as well as new Secure Chip terminals.
  • Easy to use. Simply insert your card into the chip-enabled terminal, sign or enter your PIN and remove your card once prompted.

How to Use Your Card at Secure Chip Terminals:

Step 1: Insert the chip end of your card into the terminal with the chip facing up.  Step 2: Keep your card in the terminal throughout the transaction and follow the prompts. Step 3: Remove your card when prompted. You may need to sign for your purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Secure Chip (EMV) and what does it mean for me?
Secure Chip cards, sometimes also called EMV cards, use a microchip instead of a magnetic stripe to store card data and protect your transactions from fraud. To make a payment at a secure chip terminal, simply follow the instructions above.

How is Secure Chip (EMV) more secure?
The secure chip issues a single-use code for each transaction. That data is specific to the chip, making hacking the information more difficult. This adds an additional layer of authentication to each transaction, helping to validate the legitimacy of the payment.

What does EMV stand for?
EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard, Visa, the three companies that created this new security standard. Because EMV uses increased data security, it is being adopted in the United States.

When will I get my new card?
Rivermark will be issuing EMV cards beginning in August 2016 and continuing through the Fall in a phased replacement. All Rivermark debit and credit cards will be reissued.

Will my card number change?
Yes. You will need to update your card number on any recurring payment accounts you have set up with merchants, utilities, etc. If you use Apple Pay, you will need to change your card information there as well.

What is different about the new secure chip card design?
The microchip is visible on the card under the Rivermark logo. You will also notice that the numbers and name on the card are flat printed instead of raised. Visa Platinum, Business Debit and Business Credit cards will feature all new designs.
