Protect Your Information this Holiday Season

Shop OnlineAs spending goes up, so does the risk of online identity theft. As you shop online, criminals are looking for ways to take your information.

Here are some tips to help you keep your information protected this holiday season.

Shop Secure
Some fake sites may serve as a front for people trying to steal your information. If in doubt, do a quick internet search with the name of the company and the word review to read other experiences. If you don’t recognize a store, find it suspicious, or it doesn't come up in search, don’t take the risk of shopping there.

Make sure all websites you shop on are encrypted. Look for https at the beginning of the web address on every page you visit, not just the page that captures your payment information.

Be Wary of Public Wi-Fi
Placing that gift order waiting in line at the coffee shop may be convenient, but be very careful when using public wi-fi networks. Many times these hotspots are not secure, which puts you at risk. Use a secure, encrypted network, which will require you to provide a password.

Set Up Alerts
Set up notifications and receive a text or an email for specified triggers. Set up a notification when your balance reaches a certain threshold, or when you make a purchase over a specific amount. Visa Purchase Alerts can be set up to come to your email after every transaction. Or you can set up account level alerts within Online Banking.

Use Visa Checkout
Visa Checkout is a fast and secure way to make purchases online. Not only will you not have to enter your information each time you make a payment, but your personal information is secure behind multiple layers of security. Enroll for free and start using Visa Checkout at participating merchants.

Protect Your PC
When shopping at home, make sure you install anti-virus and anti-malware software on your personal computer or Android device. Set the software to update automatically to ensure you always have the most up-to-date version.
