Why We're UniqueOur History In February 1951, 58 Safeway store employees listened to a presentation about the advantages of credit unions. More than 60 years later, the credit union they formed is still going strong, serving over 59,000 members.
Rivermark Community Credit Union’s history reveals six different names (Safeway Portland Employees Federal Credit Union, Safeway Portland Credit Union, Safeway NorWest Credit Union, Safeway NorWest Central Credit Union, Safeway Northwest Central Credit Union and Rivermark Community Credit Union). We have evolved from first serving only Safeway employees and their families to our current community charter, adopted in 2004.
What is the Credit Union Difference? Rivermark Community Credit Union is an Oregon-based, not-for-profit financial cooperative, owned by the people who save and borrow here – our members. Credit unions are unique and different from other financial institutions. We do not issue stock or pay dividends to outside shareholders. Instead, earnings are returned to our members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest on deposits and lower fees. Each credit union member has equal ownership and one vote, regardless of how much money a member has on deposit. Credit unions are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, elected by and from the credit union’s membership.
Mission and Values As a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative, Rivermark Community Credit Union is committed to “helping our members get the most out of life.” For more than 60 years, families in our communities have trusted us for unique and affordable financial solutions that make their lives easier.
With great rates, convenient access and the best banking deals around, Rivermark Community Credit Union helps more than 59,000 members get the most out of life by maximizing their time and money. With friendly, personal service and advice they can trust, our members know we’ll do what it takes to get the job done – every time.
Community Involvement Employee Committees Rivermark Community Credit Union encourages our employees to get involved in the Credit Union and our community. Employee committees such as Community Affairs, Credit Unions for Kids, The Green Team, Wellness and Governmental Affairs provide volunteer opportunities for our employees to demonstrate that they truly care and are passionate about who we are and what we do!
People Helping People Credit unions exist to help people. This philosophy is evident in the many community activities and worthwhile causes that the Credit Union and our employees are involved in. Every year we contribute volunteer time and money to a variety of community outreach and philanthropic programs in our field of membership.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes, Schoolhouse Supplies and SOLV river clean-ups are just a few of the ways that Rivermark Community Credit Union and its employees give back to the community. We also raise funds for pediatric hospitals in our area through “Dough for Doernbecher” (a partnership with the Safeway Bread Plant to produce, bag and sell more than 2,000 pounds of holiday cookie dough each year).
Our enthusiasm for community involvement has resulted in the receipt of multiple Dora Maxwell Awards for Social Responsibility in Oregon! This award is presented by the Credit Union National Association for the outstanding social responsibility projects implemented within the credit union’s community. We are also the proud recipients of three consecutive Corporate Philanthropy Awards from the Portland Business Journal.
Locations Our members primarily reside in an eleven-county area in Oregon, consisting of Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Polk, Yamhill, Marion, Hood River, Gilliam, Sherman, Wasco and Wheeler counties. We have nine branches located in Portland, Beaverton, Clackamas, Gresham, Newberg, Salem, The Dalles and Maupin.
Rivermark’s new Hawthorne Branch opened in July 2010. The 8,800 square foot building was built adjacent to the existing branch, which was demolished and recycled. The branch’s design reflects our unique brand and respects the character of the Hawthorne neighborhood with amenities such as a walk-up teller station and covered bike parking. Sustainability and local sourcing was a priority, so we included many features such as a green roof to reduce storm water runoff, an on-site storm water filtration system, extensive use of recycled materials, landscaping to conserve water, a moisture-sensing irrigation system, automated lighting and dimming controls and the use of cleaning products that meet environmental standards.
Our administrative office is located in Beaverton, near Highway 217 and Hall Boulevard. More than two-thirds of our employees work there and enjoy its close proximity to Fanno Creek and the Greenway Trail. Since opening this facility in late 2005, we have been striving to protect the environment by using soy-based toners and inks, sustainable earth janitorial products and low-energy lighting. We also place a heavy emphasis on recycling and are conserving water with our natural vegetation replanting project.
