Community Involvement
Making a Difference
At Rivermark, we're committed to a focused mission of making a
difference in our community by being involved in local community
events and by helping non-profits that focus on youth, education
or health-related issues. To accomplish this mission, we sponsor
events, raise funds and contribute hundreds of hours of volunteer
time.
2007 - 2008 Community Events
SMART (Start Making a Reader Today)
Every week, more than 9,000 SMART volunteers read one-on-one with two children for 30 minutes each. In
the 2006/2007 school year, several Rivermark employees were among
the SMART volunteers who helped 11,000 Oregon school children to
improve their reading skills and enhance their life prospects. Students participating in SMART also receive two books per month to keep and read with their families. If you would like to
help a student learn to love reading, volunteer for SMART today!
Credit Unions for Kids (Doernbecher Children's Hospital)
Each
year, Rivermark participates in a campaign to raise money to support
Doernbecher Children's Hospital. In 2007 we raised over $36,000 through
a variety of fundraising events including barbecues, garage sales,
and Dough for Doernbecher. Dough for Doernbecher is a partnership
with the Safeway Bread Plant to produce, bag, and sell over 2000
pounds of holiday cookie dough.
Concerts in the Park
Hosted by the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District, the much anticipated Concert in the Park series was back in 2007 and bigger than ever. As sponsors of the Greenway, Garden Home, and Raleigh Park Concerts in the Park, Rivermark was able to help provide a summer evening of fun and music for neighborhoods across the West Metro area. Featuring musical entertainment and family-friendly activities, the Concerts attract hundreds of event-goers and have become a staple of summertime for many at Rivermark and in our surrounding communities. Rivermark intends to continue our support of the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation District's annual Concert events in 2008.
Great Strides Walk
Rivermark
was a co-sponsor of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides
Walk in Portland on Saturday, May 12, 2007. This annual national
event raises money to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Over
10 million
Americans carry the defective gene that causes this disease, which
affects the lungs and digestive tract. Over 90 cents of every dollar
raised goes toward funding research to find a cure. The Great Strides Walk was able to raise $124,000 for cystic fibrosis research. Rivermark will be hosting a walk team again in 2008 during the Portland Great Strides Walk on May 17, 2008.
Hawthorne Day! Street Fair
On Saturday, August 18, 2007, Rivermark sponsored the Hawthorne Day! Street Fair. Celebrating the end of construction on Hawthorne Boulevard and the placement of historic plaques on each end of the neighborhood, this community event drew hundreds of attendees from throughout the Portland Metro region. Proceeds raised from the event are channeled back into the Hawthorne community. And back by popular demand, the Hawthorne Day! Street Fair will be held during the summer of 2008. Keep an eye out for your credit union during this year's festivities!
Newberg Old Fashioned Days Parade
This annual event culminates in one-day food and music festival celebrates local artists and
businesses in Newberg. The Harvest Fest has been cancelled this year, however, Rivermark hopes to be involved with next year's festivities July 24 through July 27, 2008.
Walk to Cure Diabetes

Despite the rain, hundreds of walkers descended on Oaks Park on September 30, 2007 to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Walkers raised over $350,000 to benefit the foundation with walkers from Rivermark Community Credit Union contributing over $7,200.
Each year participants gather donations and pledges from friends, co-workers, and family members to help raise funds for the JDRF. Participants raising over $100 received a free tee-shirt commemorating their contribution and all walkers received a free ride bracelet compliments of Oaks Amusement Park to ride the various attractions for the rest of the day. Scott Burgess, CEO of Rivermark Community Credit, was co-chair of the event.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation raises funds and awareness for juvenile type 1 (also known as insulin dependent) diabetes which afflicts over 1 million Americans. Each year approximately 13,000 new cases are diagnosed. While doctors and scientists have discovered ways of managing diabetes on a day-to-day basis, there is no known cure for the disease.
Rivermark looks forward to continuing our support for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation during the 2008 Walk to Cure Diabetes in September.
Festival Japan 2007
